Olympic torch dousing in Brazil

My mornings are usually filled with first-thing kisses, coffee, breakfast then work — which entails reading local news written far from American shores. Today was different. My inbox was chirping with an invaluable message from a dear friend in Brazil.

Amid the pomp and circumstance of the Olympic torch snaking its way through Brazil, the flame was extinguished multiple times. The video above shows one of the three attempts to dampen the symbolic flame as it traipsed through Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro.

Apparently, the stateside media blackout about issues and happenings people care about is not a local phenomenon.

With the ousting of President Dilma Rousseff, the people of Brazil must be fed up with watching, participating in or tolerating games — whether Olympic or not. Come Friday, August 5, the games, both political and athletic, will proceed as the opposition to either goes mainly unreported and certainly unobstructed.
